Identify Hazardous Energy Sources: Recognize and locate potential energy sources such as electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and thermal sources, and understand the risks associated with each.
Understand Lockout/Tagout Procedures: Learn the standardized steps for isolating and securing energy sources by applying lockout/tagout devices to prevent accidental equipment start-up or release of energy.
Verify Energy Isolation: Verify that equipment is safely isolated from energy sources, often by attempting to start or move the equipment after locking it out to ensure no residual energy remains.
Recognize Authorized Personnel Roles: Understand who is authorized to perform LOTO and who may only be affected or observe. Authorized personnel require specific training in performing lockout/tagout procedures.
Follow Proper Tagging Practices: Learn how to tag equipment accurately to communicate lockout status to other workers
.
Manage Energy Release Procedures: Safely release or control residual or stored energy through specific methods, such as bleeding hydraulic lines or discharging capacitors.
Aim to ensure that employees can safely work on or near equipment that could unexpectedly start up, release stored energy, or otherwise pose a hazard. The LOTO training requirements are defined in OSHA’s standard 29 CFR 1910.147.
